Biography

Suzanne Ulrich’s collaged paintings focus on color and form. Asserting that she still thinks of herself as a painter, Ulrich now centers her practice on the production of small, cut and torn collages of gouache-painted and pasted paper. Having lost interest in figuration early on, the artist’s style has evolved gradually toward complete abstraction, culminating recently in works composed entirely of interlocking, colorful rectangles. “The possibilities are just endless. The rectangle for me both dominates and gives structure to the pieces,” Ulrich describes. “I intentionally avoid any illusionistic reference of any kind and work until it becomes a composed, self-contained work of art.”
