Biography

Feminist artist Sleigh is best known for her paintings of women, and for reversing stereotypes of women by putting men in poses and positions which traditionally depicted women. Sleigh said of her work, "To me, women were often portrayed as sex objects in humiliating poses. I wanted to give my perspective. I liked to portray both man and woman as intelligent and thoughtful people with dignity and humanism that emphasized love and joy." Public collections of her work include: the National Portrait Gallery, London; The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH; Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA. She was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Women’s Caucus for Art, 2011; Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement, College Art Association, 2008; Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, 1985; and National Endowment for the Arts, Visual Artists Fellowship, 1982.
