Tal R
Israeli, b. 1967
Tal R’s vibrant, expressionistic paintings offer 21st-century mash-ups of outsider art and 20th-century styles including Fauvism, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau. Tal R, who was born Tal Rosenzweig, plumbs mythology and photographs to generate his source material: His subjects have ranged from red-light district storefronts to contorted human figures and caged animals. Tal R blurs the boundaries between figure and ground, and swaths of his paintings often look more like geometric patterns than representational imagery. His exuberant, high-contrast palettes provide their own sumptuous delights. The artist has exhibited in New York, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, London, and Paris. His works have achieved six figures at auction and belong in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Essl Museum, the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, Moderna Museet, and Saatchi Gallery, among others.
