TAMAR ZINN: At the Still Point,

“In my paintings, I explore the expression of color, texture, and spatial relationships through the lens of geometric abstraction,” explains Tamar Zinn, who uses the square as the primary vehicle for her explorations in her colorful, finely balanced paintings and works on paper. Inspired by the rhythms of music, particularly jazz (which is always playing in her studio), and dance, Zinn builds tension into her compositions. Busy, bustling, rapidly painted areas push against calm, slowly painted passages of color; diaphanous and opaque surfaces overlap; and formally complex geometric arrangements abut simple, single square shapes. Zinn works loosely, alternately building up and sanding down layers of paint until she finds, as she describes, “the just right balance between activity and calm, between reasoned decision making and intuition.”
