Biography

Tanya Poole’s practice is a unique fusion of video animation with traditional oil painting and portraiture. Frustrated with the limitations of video and an incessant desire for a fuller form of portraiture, Poole found that she could combine the expressionistic possibilities of oil paint with the narrative possibilities of video, developing an original medium of “animated painting”. Poole films both her subjects and canvases while she paints her portraits, capturing dynamic likenesses in the stop-motion animations she creates by stringing together images of the paintings from its various stages of completion. She shows these alongside her paintings and videos, presenting a more holistic form of portraiture that challenges the traditional notion of a single, frozen likeness.
