Tatyana von Leys
Austrian, b. 1956
Tatyana von Leys was born in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1956. Initially studying French, she later immersed herself in philosophy as a visiting student. She began dedicating herself fully to painting in 1990 and now resides in Tegernsee, southern Germany.
During the 1990s, von Leys collaborated with the renowned curator Peter Weiermair, presenting her works in prominent exhibitions and publications. Her theoretical reflections and artistic practice converged in her book Das Neue Denken: Technik und Macht ist Evolution neu gedacht (2018), which was presented at Vienna Art Week and awarded Book of the Month in December 2018 by transform magazine. At that time, she was known as Tatyana Wirth, and Galerie Krinzinger published an extensive report featuring her works in the art book Kunsttherorie Zeitgenössischer Kunst.
Her art explores the creation and maintenance of complex systems, focusing on the genetic modification of humans, cyborgization, and the digitalization of human personalities in the context of a posthuman future. These themes are reflected in exhibitions such as The Future of the Body at Kunsthaus Graz (2022) and Technology, Art and the Posthuman at John Cabot University in Rome (2023). Von Leys' work questions the changing perception of humanity from the industrial age to the digital era, reflecting on the transition from a natural to an artificial order.
Her works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Germany and internationally and are represented in major collections, consistently highlighting the interplay between technology and human existence.
