Thandazani Ndlovu
Zimbabwean, b. 1985
Thandazani Ndlovu was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and is a self-taught contemporary figurative and impressionist artist. His early interest in drawing developed during childhood in the township of Nkulumane, later shaped by years spent working in a shoe factory before committing fully to his artistic practice. Ndlovu’s breakthrough came with a body of work exploring Africa’s disappearing cultural traditions, which established his focus on identity, heritage, and shared human experience. He has since exhibited widely at art festivals and galleries across Africa, and his work is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. Working primarily on solid black surfaces, Ndlovu reveals his subjects through the application of white highlights, allowing figures and emotions to emerge from darkness. His practice centers on facial expression, emotion, and the quiet dramas of daily life, using light and contrast to explore presence, memory, and connection.
