Though digital technology has arguably simplified people’s ability to create and manipulate photographs, Thibault Hazelzet prefers to work in an analog manner. Trained as a painter at the École des Beaux Arts de Versailles, Hazelzet blends this background with his photography in hybrid self-portraits that exist between reality and fantasy. The works begin as photographs that Hazelzet manipulates in the darkroom. He then adds paint directly to the negative, printing the resulting works as photographs. Working in this distinctive and enigmatic way, the artist ultimately obscures as much as he reveals, both of his process and of himself.
