Thomas Heinser
German
Thomas Heinser was raised in Dinslaken, Germany, and received his degree in Communication
Arts from the FH School for Communications Design in Düsseldorf. He also attended classes at
Kunstakademie Düsseldorf at the time when Joseph Beuys was a professor. He lives and works
in San Francisco.
Heinser enjoys a widely versatile career as both a commercial and fine arts photographer. His
experience and dedication to craft is evident whether staging aircraft on runways for NetJets
and Bombardier, navigating an arctic highway for Ford Motor Co., working to convey emotional
depth in portraits or taking early-morning flights for aerials.
The photographer has been recognized in the United States and Germany for his published and
exhibited works. Heinser’s portrait series include Tank Top (2006), Circus Portrait (2009) and
Still Life (2014). Aerial photography collections include Überblick (2011), Blickwinkel (2013) and
Reduziert (2016), featuring California’s recent geographical changes and the damage its
landscape has sustained.
Heinser is particularly known for his skillful rendering of the essential stillness and innate
sculptural qualities of whatever subject he chooses to photograph. Kenneth Baker of the San
Francisco Chronicle writes “His work, shot from a helicopter, looks at familiar terrain with a
detachment that mere altitude cannot express…seeking meaning as much in the chance
crisscross of ship and bridge, as in their familiar utility.”
