Timothy App (b. 1947, Akron, OH) is a prominent contemporary American abstract geometric painter living and working in Baltimore, MD. His work, characterized by dynamic visual tensions and geometric precision, has made him an important painter in the MD/DC region. App earned his BFA from Kent State University (1970) and MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University (1974). He was a professor at Pomona College (1974-78), the University of New Mexico (1978-90), and the Maryland Institute College of Art (1990-2019). His accolades include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, multiple Maryland Arts Council Grants, and a Trustee’s Award from MICA. App’s work has been widely exhibited, including in over 200 group exhibitions and numerous solo shows in the USA, Poland, and Japan. His art is part of collections globally at institutions such as the Albright-Knox Art Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, Tucson Museum, and Phillips Collection, among others. App’s paintings often explore the motif of the portal, a symmetrical form representing a passage from one state to another. He reflects on the significance of this form, stating, “The metaphysical implications of this compelling form continue to haunt my thinking about painting.” Timothy App’s signature color pallet and innovative approach to geometric abstraction has left a lasting impact on contemporary painting.
