Timothy Buwalda
American,

Miami-based artist Timothy Buwalda is known for his large-scale oil paintings that combine the formal aspects of painting with conceptual imagery. Bordering abstraction and realism, Buwalda’s paintings are metaphorically themed—often in relation to the achievement of goals. In paintings of wrecked automobiles, Buwalda compares the relationship between the crashed cars and painting; both involve decisive moments: “How the painting is built and previous layers discarded is similar to how the cars are crashed and need to be fixed or left in their state,” he has said. “This can be broadened to speak to the choices we make at every moment, and the quiet consequences that are left.” In another body of work, “Dislocation”, Buwalda used a woodland forest to reinterpret the concept of home.
