Each of Timothy Tomkins’s paintings begins as a digital photograph. Tompkins uses his own photographs as source imagery, then digitally reduces them to comprise between 12 and 15 colors with blurred contours. He then executes these as paintings in high-gloss, commercial enamels on aluminum panels. The quick-drying nature of his medium forces Tompkins to work in an expressive way, and preserves a liquid quality in the application of paint. His paintings are grouped into series by subject, and frequently show variations on a similar theme, such as views of the Empire State building in various weather conditions and portions of the United States Insterstate from a driver’s perspective. His images address consumerism, classical themes, technology, science, and art historical movements.
