Biography

Tokihiro Sato’s dreamy light-speckled photographs offer little to reveal how they were made. In fact, the photographer works in a singular way: with his camera playing an equally important role as the light pens and mirrors he uses. Working in darkness, Sato employs long exposures—opening the shutter on his medium-format camera for up to three hours—while manipulating urban environments and wooded landscapes with additional light. The artist’s body does not appear in the images, but the light he reflects back at the camera gives a vague hint of his presence.
