Tom Van Puyvelde
Belgian, b. 1985
Tom Van Puyvelde is a Belgian artist and designer, born in 1985 in Temse, Belgium. His career began after completing his degree in Architecture from Sint-Lucas Ghent in 2008. With a growing passion for the visual arts, he pursued and completed a Master’s in Visual Arts at the School of Arts Ghent in 2014, where he was mentored by esteemed figures like Jan Debbaut and Vincent Geyskens. This academic foundation, coupled with his experience as an assistant at Studio Koen van den Broek, profoundly influenced his conceptual development as a painter.
Van Puyvelde’s career is marked by his refusal to be confined by traditional artistic categories like abstraction and figuration. He considers representation to be secondary to the process of translation, with the endless painterly possibilities inherent in his source material forming the essence of his practice.
After spending significant time working in Brussels, Lisbon, and Berlin, Van Puyvelde returned to his roots in 2022. Since then, his work has been showcased both nationally and internationally. In 2023, he held a solo exhibition at Chambre Avec Vue in Saignon, France, followed by another at Common Sense Gallery in Vienna in 2024. His first solo exhibition in Belgium, titled “Evanescence,” took place at Buysse Gallery in Knokke from April 13 to May 19, 2024. This exhibition is particularly significant, as it coincides with the gallery’s opening and marks Van Puyvelde’s debut solo presentation on Belgian soil.
In addition to his solo work, Van Puyvelde has also contributed to group exhibitions, including those at Aqualex Knokke (2022) and Plus-One Gallery Antwerp (2024).
