Tone Vigeland

Jewelry designer Tone Vigeland suggests the imagery of her nation’s Viking heritage—coiled snakes, celestial bodies—with her modernist work in pure metals like silver and steel. Her aesthetic is fluid, and even in her most complex works, like a bracelet constructed from dozens of individual silver nails, held in the MoMA’s permanent collection, she maintains a look of clean continuity. Vigeland also referenced the Vikings with her early experimentation with chainmail, a fine wire mesh she weaved in order to create jewelry that would “hug the body and move like skin.” In the past 15 years, she has expanded her practice to include sculpture, though her material and aesthetic concerns remain largely consistent.
