Tony Camargo
Brazilian, b. 1979
Tony Camargo (Paula Freitas, Brazil, 1979) lives and works in Curitiba, Brazil. His works dialogues with two basic languages: photography and painting. Seen in the past as conflicting means of art, once the photography was believed to take over the painting and its the privileged status of window of the world, now they are put together in the artist’s works, establishing a dynamic spacial game with the surroundings of the photographs. Added to that, Camargo’s production is witty without being obvious and very refined in the way it is presented and connected to recent history of art. Tony plays with art in the same way a child plays with his favourite toys: seriously, re-signifying and re-descovering all their possibilities all the time.
Tony Camargo’s works have been having the following awards: Residency Scholarship at EXO-Copan in São Paulo and Rumos Visuais Prize, Itaú Cultural also in São Paulo, both in 2006, Fundação Cultural de Curitiba - Visual Arts Production Scholarhip, Curitiba/Brazil in 2007, Victor Meirelles National Salon, Florianopolis/Brazil in 2008.
Amongst the public collections that have acquired Camargo’s works are Museu de Arte Moderna de [Museum of Modern Art of] São Paulo/Brazil, Museu de Arte Contemporânea do [Museum od Contemporary Art of] Ceará, Fortaleza/Brazil, Museu de Arte de [Museum of Art of] Santa Catarina, Florianópolis/Brazil, Museu de Arte Contemporânea do [Museum of Contemporary Art of] Paraná, Curitiba/Brazil, Museu de Arte da Universidade Federal do Paraná [Museum of Art of Universidade Federal do Paraná], Curitiba/Brazil, Clube da Fotografia do Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo [Photography Club of Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo], São Paulo/Brazil.
