Torbjørn Rødland
Norwegian, b. 1970
Torbjørn Rødland’s tender, uncanny photographs feature dreamlike tableaux. The Norwegian-born, Los Angeles–based photographer makes portraits, still lifes, and nature scenes that often emphasize the strangeness and sensuality of touch. Rødland graduated from the National College of Art and Design in Bergen, Norway, in 1995, and has since exhibited in Los Angeles, London, New York, Paris, Milan, and beyond. His work belongs to the collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, among other major institutions. Rødland views his photography as “transpluralistic” in nature, moving between documentarian representation and poetic expressionism.
