Toyen
Czech, 1902–1980
Toyen, born Marie Čermínová in 1902 in Prague, emerged as a formidable force in the Surrealist art movement. Unconstrained by the norms of her time, Toyen challenged gender conventions, adopting a gender-neutral name and exploring the fluid boundaries of sexuality and identity in her artworks. Toyen’s creativity blossomed through collaborations with fellow artists like Jindřich Štyrský, with whom she founded the Artificialism movement, a precursor to their later involvement in the Czech Surrealist Movement.
Toyen’s canvas often ventured into the realms of dreams and the unconscious, bringing forth vivid, sometimes erotic, visual narratives. Throughout her life, she remained politically engaged, using her art as a tool to voice dissent against oppressive regimes, including Nazi occupation. Toyen exhibited extensively in Prague, Paris, and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the Surrealist movement. Since her death in 1980, her work has commanded six- and seven-figure results at auction.
