Urs Frei
Swiss, born 1958

Urs Frei’s practice is a deconstruction of the processes of artistic production and display. Using everyday materials, trash, and the cast-offs of art making, Frei creates works that blur the boundaries between studio and gallery, product and production, and painting and sculpture. His signature pieces are wooden planks, dropcloths, buckets, and plastic bags, painted in varying degrees of coloristic abstraction. Although often displayed in installation-type formats, sometimes alongside extra materials, each of Frei’s pieces invites individual contemplation of its aesthetic, abstract qualities.
