Biography

Recurrent motifs in Uwe Wittwer’s paintings, watercolors, and ink-jet prints include references to Old Master paintings, still lifes, and interior and genre scenes. A painter of appropriated images, Wittwer is concerned with authenticity and truth, multiple refractions of reality, and the role of the artist as image hunter and voyeur. He gathers his source material—images of images—from the depths of the Internet, rendering them in a blurry, haunting aesthetic. Wittwer’s work has an oppressive, nostalgic beauty, meant to suggest the difficult process of coming to terms with the past.
