Violet Dennison

American, born 1989

Using materials from her urban surroundings, including concrete and coffee cups, Violet Dennison crafts sculptures that attend to the modern conditions of labor. While her sculptures address drab working conditions with wit and sometimes with a mocking tone, she rejects terms like satire as too restrictive, stating that she wants “art to be more open–ended than that.” Her latest series of evocative works stem from found office chairs, which she disassembled and re-combined with whimsical arrangements composed of such everyday industrial materials as rebar. When not in the studio, Dennison is co-running the alternative exhibition space, Violet’s Café.
