Virginia Katz’s landscape-themed works reflect the artist’s commitment to the environment. She creates large- and small-scale abstract landscapes in a variety of media, often applying acrylic paint in a thick impasto or piecing together squares to form mosaics that resemble waves and mountains. Her most recent series of paintings combines large sensual brushstrokes with aquatic hues, suggesting abstracted marine topography maps. Other series, such as Particulate 405 FWY, feature aerial shots of freeways filled with cars, acting as a commentary on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by cars and drawing attention to global warming.
