Walter Stuempfig

Resolutely against the dominance of abstraction and the avant-garde in the 20th century, Walter Stuempfig remained committed to naturalism and the academic tradition throughout his career. A prolific painter, his subject matter included urban and natural landscapes, still lifes, figure studies, and portraits of his family and friends. Stuempfig ardently admired Nicolas Poussin, Caravaggio, and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and considered himself a romantic realist. Like Edward Hopper, to whom he is often compared, Stuempfig created works infused with moodiness, melancholy, and a sense of the loneliness of modern life.
