Biography

Wanxin Zhang combines imagery and ideas from his upbringing in China during Mao’s Cultural Revolution with the irreverent attitudes and pop proclivities of California funk art, a movement that inspired the artist particularly upon his move to the Bay Area. Zhang’s ceramic figures, many of which are modeled after the famed terracotta warriors, mask their precise detail with fractured limbs, loosely applied pigments, and drippy glazes. His work in this style represents a subjective rebuke of the nationalist ideologies with which Zhang grew up. “My pieces are about finding my personal identity, while sparking a contemporary dialogue about social, historical and political issues,” Zhang has said.
