Werner Bronkhorst
Australian, b. 2001
Werner Bronkhorst (b. Pretoria, South Africa) is a Sydney-based contemporary artist recognized for his playful yet technically complex visual language. He works in two distinct styles: hyper-realistic miniature scenes set against thickly textured abstract backgrounds, and expressive charcoal drawings of cars overlaid with bold text. Drawing inspiration from Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and pop culture, his work explores themes of scale, speed, memory, and everyday life. After working as a bespoke furniture designer, Bronkhorst returned to art in 2022 following the birth of his daughter, which reignited his creative drive. Using leftover building materials, he developed a method of layering paint to create sculptural, three-dimensional surfaces that serve as stage-like settings for his tiny painted figures. His audience has grown rapidly through social media, where he shares the raw and engaging process behind his work. Bronkhorst independently manages all aspects of his practice, serving as his own artist, curator, and seller.
