Wifredo Díaz Valdéz
Uruguayan, born 1932

Wifredo Díaz Valdéz was raised in Uruguay and trained in carpentry, which he still actively practices and which continues to influence his production of non-functional art objects. He is known to modify wooden, artisan-made utilitarian objects found in the rural regions around his hometown, which he turns into freestanding abstract sculpture. The raw materials for Valdéz’s sculptures include furniture, utensils, wheels, and windows. Before beginning each work, Valdéz considers the object’s structure and considers its potential; the final pieces appear to be impossibly balanced works with unexpected folds and joints.
