Photographer Wijnanda Deroo travels around the globe—from Indonesia to the Netherlands, Puerto Rico to Upstate New York—to photograph nondescript settings such as restaurants, bedrooms, cafes, foyers, and hallways, capturing timeless images of beautiful, if sometimes shabby, interiors. Despite Deroo’s disparate subject matter and settings, the warm, sensuous colors, rigid geometric compositions, and cinematic lighting unite her pictures. Always unpopulated, the interiors evoke a sense of melancholy isolation, but rather than conjuring loneliness, Deroo makes solitude seem worthwhile, even desirable.
