William Quigley
American, b. 1961
William Quigley is an American Artist working in New York City and East Hampton. Known for his famous portraits, he has been painting both figuratively and abstractly since the 80s. His paintings are in over 450 collections and has shown internationally in the US, India, South America and Europe. He received his MFA at Columbia University, BFA at Philadelphia College of Art, Tyler School of Art in Rome and The University of Pennsylvania. His first exhibition was with Andy Warhol in 1985 at Henry S. McNeil Gallery. McNeil is one of the leading collectors of Contemporary Art. Quigley showed in galleries, and infamous nightclubs like Palladium, Area with Basquiat, Schnabel, Haring, Hambleton, and many of the downtown 80s scene. Moving to Los Angeles in 1989 was represented by Manny Silverman, showing with abstract artists like Joan Mitchell, Robert Rauschenberg, Alfred Leslie, Norman Blum, and Willem DeKooning. In 1992-93 he was invited to show at Art Basel with the fair's founder Ernest Beyeler through Galerie Ferran Cano. After Basel did a year residency at the Miro Foundation in Mallorca. Returning to LA in 1993 founded AB Gallery, directed by Dan Bernier, upstarting fledgling talents like Marc Chiat, Manuel Ocampo, Toba Khedorri, Steve Hurd, Julien Bismuth, Mike Bouchet, Jason Rhoades, George Stoll, Kevin Sullivan, Russell Crotty, and Martin Kersels. He has painted commissioned portraits of, and in many cases for, President Bush and Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Jordan, Shaquille Oneal, LeBron James, Wayne Gretzky, Eminem, Muhammed Ali, Bruce Springsteen, Ice Cube, Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson.
Because of collector base of supporters and dedication to Children, Soldiers, and extensive charities, in 2006 his work was featured on ABC TV, “Life Styles of the Rich and Famous”, and in 2007 was selected as VH1 featured Artist of the Year along with honorees, John Mayer, Mariah Carey, Roger Waters and President William and Hillary Clinton.
