Biography

One of America’s leading contemporary landscape painters, Woody Gwyn paints the deserts, mesas, and long highway underpasses in the American West, as well as sites seen during the artist’s travels, such as the shimmering effects of light on a pond in London’s Hampstead Heath. Gwyn’s vast panoramas and compositions are sometimes as long as 16 feet and typically feature expanses of space seen from dramatic angles. “Subject matter is just an excuse to express a quality of light and space,” he has said. “As a realist painter, I hope I transcend the subject.” Gwyn is influenced by the work of the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco and the American painters Milton Resnick and Richard Diebenkorn.
