Biography

In short, focused video and performance works, Xavier Cha reveals unsettling facts about human emotion and self-expression, often exposing the cinematic narrative means typically used to convey them. Currently based in New York, the Los Angeles native works with professional performers as well as amateurs found through casting calls. In Untitled (2012), she administered a low dose of the hallucinogenic drug DMT to amateur participants before filming them. Soberly shot in close-up, her subjects appeared vacant, “unable to curate their own visage,” as the artist put it, revealing how, in our post-internet age, we have grown so accustomed to dramatic self-presentation.
