Yan Binghui
Chinese, born 1956

Yan Binghui represents the 1980s avant-garde art movement in China, of which Zhu Jinshi and Ai Weiwei were also members, as well as the 1990s experimental ink movement. Producing works in modern ink wash, Yan is concerned with updating traditional Chinese painting. Since the mid-’90s, he has used layered ink textures in balanced compositions of square and round forms that have been perceived as representing heaven and earth, or day and night. “Having simultaneously cultivated calligraphy as a form of art and self-expression,” Yan says, “I must admit there is always the force of calligraphy present in my paintings and vice versa.”
