Yangyang Pan’s vibrant gestural abstractions take their inspiration from nature, particularly floral gardens. Her expressive canvases, built up from layers of oil paint, ultimately depict emotional landscapes and personal journeys. Pan received a BA in 1998 and an MFA in 2002 from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. She taught at the school until she immigrated to Canada in 2006. Pan cites Eastern and Western influences, including Song Dynasty artist Ma Yuan, Ming Dynasty ink painter Bada Shanren, and Abstract Expressionists Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, and Cy Twombly. Her work is held in public and private collections, including the Government of Ontario Art Collection and the Rochester Museum of Fine Arts.
