Informed by Color Field Painting and Minimalism, Yuko Shiraishi suggests imaginary architecture with her paintings of geometric planes and bright bands of abstract lines. Shiraishi works with oil paints, layering geometric figures or rendering stripes of solid color horizontally across monochromatic backgrounds. She transfers the same preoccupation with the merging of colored planes to her sculptural installations and architecture, attempting to illustrate the poetic and spiritual possibilities of formalism and its potential to alter one’s experience of the world.
