Largely self-taught as a photographer, Zev Jonas discovered his affinity for the medium out of necessity—in his own words, “as a means of conveying my isolation while traveling…to articulate the overwhelming sense of loneliness encountered.” Most of Jonas’ works, which have featured subjects including zoos, museums, street scenes, and advertisements, are untitled and undated, and feature unspecified locations. He works only with the available lighting on-site, in order to keep his process relatively free from complication. The layered photographs for which he is known were edited in-camera, as Jonas rarely alters his work in post-production. One of Jonas’ greatest influences has been his friend and mentor, the photographer Larry Fink.
