Biography

Zoë Zimmerman takes the albumen photographic printing process and brings it into the 21st century, producing exquisitely crafted photographs whose look and subjects harken back to the Victorian era. She began her career making landscape photographs with a large-format camera. Motherhood and shifting interests led her into the studio, where she composes and shoots still lifes and scenes with figures, frequently women and her own children. Of her choice to forgo digital technology in favor of a historical, hand-based method, Zimmerman writes: “After years spent mastering the traditional techniques of albumen printing, I have continued in my exploration of the process, taking up where the practitioners of the 1800s left off. My prints are produced by means of my own recipe and method. . . . I have not invented a new process so much as expanded on the capabilities of an old one.”
