The Writer (La Escritora)

About Adriana Duque

Adriana Duque believes that fairy tales and myths are mirrors for society; as such, they serve as the basis for many of her photographic series, which feature young girls in allegorical narratives. “Children represent a conglomerate of ideas and emotions that remain uncultivated,” she says. “They’re both the raw materials and the final product of my work.” Duque’s photographs allude to Colombian history, particularly the legacy of colonization in contemporary society and the importance of the family unit; some of the images also draw from the artist’s own childhood memories. Her distinctive aesthetic is characterized by elaborate staging, dramatic lighting, and the stoic expressions of her sitters.
