Unknown African, ‘Tellum (Pre-Dogon) Figure’, Circa 11 -14th Century, Bill Lowe Gallery

The Tellem people inhabited the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries. The Tellem peoples housed many of their relics and ancestral monuments and items of wealth in caves and underground tunnels, which might explain the almost petrified quality of the wood and the brilliant patina of this piece. The Tellem people disappeared for unknown reasons.
