About Agnieszka Kurant

Polish artist Agnieszka Kurant investigates what she calls “phantom capital”—the invisible or imagined forces that economically and politically influence society. She is interested in how fiction, myth, and rumor masquerade as material reality, trump logic, and impact how people live. Kurant’s conceptual body of work includes sculpture, installation, film, photography, and works on paper, often supplemented with extensive research and writing. Phantom Library (2011–12), a shelf of seemingly real hardcover and paperback books, is in fact a collection of volumes with blank pages attributed to authors with names borrowed from fictional literary characters.
