Alan Ebnother, ‘June 28, 2013’, Peter Blake Gallery

About Alan Ebnother

Alan Ebnother produces lush, monochromatic paintings through which he explores the infinitesimal nuances of color. He began his career as a dancer, turning to painting in 1985. For Ebnother, the two arts have a similar aesthetic. “Painting is a very sensual and tactile experience, as is dance,” he says. “Both rely on instinctual decisions, with the critical eye entering and judging after the act.” During his first decade of painting, he focused on exploring the white square and variations of the color green in tondo compositions. Later, he broadened his palette to the full range of colors and returned to square and rectangular canvases. Ebnother grinds and mixes his own pigments and customizes his brushes. “I am attempting to present a color with what I believe to be a rhythm, mark and time that best suits it,” he explains.
