Alan Macdonald, ‘Soul Food’, 2013, Rago

14" x 12" (image), 21" x 18.5" x 2.25" (framed)

Born in Malawi and now living in a small town near Edinburgh, Alan Macdonald’s meticulously crafted images are emblematic of his love of nature, history, humor, classical beauty and the surreal. His Renaissance style paintings, often incorporating words or phrases and contemporary pop culture, are at once familiar and strange, elegant and amusing. Recently included in the landmark exhibition REALITY, Modern and Contemporary British painting alongside works by Francis Bacon and David Hockney among other standard bearers in the art world, Macdonald’s work is in numerous private, public and corporate collections and in 2014 was featured in REALIZED at The Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. --Courtesy of Rago Auctions
