About Alan Magee

In his precise oil and acrylic paintings of stones, paintbrushes, animal bones, and other tools and objects, Alan Magee espouses both modern and anti-modern sensibilities. Trained as an illustrator, Magee has a technical finesse in capturing the minutiae of observed detail that aligns him with a tradition of realism; but in their compositional arrangements, his paintings are also modernist, almost abstract meditations on form. “In working with realist painting,” Magee has said, “ I hope to bring observation to the point where somebody looking at that drawn version of a real thing feels that the drawing has invited them into another realm, beyond the solid ground of ordinary experience.”
