By using semi-transparent layers and pale colors, Alejandro Corujeira creates delicate works on paper and canvas with a shallow and subtle depth of field. Corujeira has been deeply influenced by abstract and Minimalist painters like Brice Marden, Robert Ryman, and Agnes Martin, paying direct tribute to the latter in 2009 with a suite of drawings titled “A Garden for Agnes”. Corujeira’s works characteristically straddle categories of abstraction and representation, because of his use of geometric forms that nonetheless bear resemblance to plant matter and organic shapes and, as he describes, “palpitate permanently in a respiratory rhythm.”
