About Alex Coulter
“My art has always been about process over product, more specifically the creative journey as it applies to various media,” Alex Coulter has said. He creates watercolor paintings, yielding to the medium’s unpredictability and viewing them as traces of his unconscious. He lets patches of color flow into one another in compositions that skirt recognizable forms. Coulter then enlarges the images on different surfaces, reproducing them with acrylic gel. The final composition creates a trompe l’oeil effect in which the acrylic emulates the aqueous watercolor paints. These enlargements unsettle the quiet intimacy of the small watercolor originals, but give new life to the details in their enlarged iterations.
