Alex Garder is a Los Angeles–based artist who creates large-scale paintings of androgynous black bodies in surreal compositions; at times his subjects appear to be moving in slow motion. The faceless figures—often entangled by their sinewy limbs—can be seen as cold representations of our increasingly digitized personalities; voiceless figures that evoke the politics of living in a black body; or as sensual proxies for our romantic fantasies. Gardner’s consistent pastel palette only serves to amplify these interpretations by evoking an astonishing range of moods and emotions—viewers may feel calm, anxious, or tantalized, and certainly curious to see more.
