About Alex Hartley

Alex Hartley's work explores man's complex attitudes toward his built and natural environments. He addresses ideas like sanctuary, dystopia, community, belonging, and isolation in glass-enclosed photographs of architectural structures, room-size installations (like his 2001 work Case Study, based on modernist residential building experiments), and recent large color photographs with painstakingly crafted three-dimensional sculptural elements, such as Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes, pasted on in low relief. Nowhereisland, an island Hartley first discovered in the High Artic in 2004, will be transported south as part of London's cultural celebrations for the 2012 Olympic Games.
