The crystallized books are intended to slowly alter in appearance over time. The crystals transform from translucent to opaque while the sculptural form of the book remains intact. In order to preserve the intended slow rate of change, I suggest the sculpture be kept (as best as possible) in a consistent climate with low humidity and normal room temperature or cooler, as well as away from direct heat and direct sunlight. Individual crystals may shed when handled.
Series: Alexis Arnold’s practice is material and process driven. She utilizes sculpture, installations and mixed media 2-D art to create a dialogue around time, transformation and perception. In this Crystalized Book series Arnold contrasts the materiality of the book and the text or content. “The crystals remove the text and solidify the books into aesthetic, non-functional objects. These pieces are transformed into artifacts or geologic specimens imbued with the history of time, use, and memory. The crystals and book shapes spark a sense of wonder akin to a great piece of literature.”
