About Alexis Portilla

Abstract artist Alexis Portilla is known for his compositions of atmospheric color that feature an expansive range of symbol-like marks. He notes, “My goal is not to focus on one or the other [atmosphere or symbol] for any particular work but to let the natural development of the piece describe the interplay between the two modes; form and atmosphere being one mode, line and shape being the other.” Portilla’s motifs are based on images from his memory, as well as his affinity for Oceanic art. He explores these inspirations in a variety of mediums, including etchings, ink on Mylar, oil on canvas, paper-based work, and wax.
