About Ali Smith

Ali Smith paints vibrant, abstract compositions in oil on canvas whose forms suggest complex organic structures and imaginary landscapes. Her brightly colored networks of lines and forms, which constitute a personal language of motifs and shapes, are typically set against monochrome backgrounds, or what appear to be dark interior spaces. Smith begins by creating drawn studies on paper, and her paintings are redolent of doodles. Speaking of her chosen medium, Smith has said that oil paint “can take on so many different qualities; it can be sculptural, sensual, poetic, plastic … It parallels what I want to express about my life.”
