Alma Allen, ‘Bronze Coffee Table’, The Future Perfect

About Alma Allen

Alma Allen’s abstract, almost biomorphic sculptures are characterized by their heightened attention toward material. A self-taught artist, Allen works in Joshua Tree and his materials—reclaimed wood, bronze, and marble—suggest an affinity with the desert flora and landscape. He meticulously finishes the surface of each piece to accentuate its tactile qualities. Allen also creates more utilitarian objects, such as stools, tables, and bowls, all of which employ the same attention to detail. Functionally and formally, his work recalls southern California artists Ken Price and Peter Voulkos.

American, b. 1970, Utah, based in Joshua Tree, California
