About Amalia Giacomini
Amalia Giacomini says she is most interested in creating ambience and space—“a frame without matter.” Giacomini, who studied architecture and urban planning, is known for her experiential installations that tamper with their viewers’ sensory perceptions of space. She covers floors, ceilings, walls, and doorways using simple straight and curved lines in limited palettes; these installations shift and optically distort the interior architecture, making it purposefully difficult to navigate and even comprehend. She also makes smaller wall-mounted works, with irregular, layered grids using elastic fibers, held in position with rectangular frames. These optically manipulate the viewer’s sense of a two-dimensional plane.
